OtherMedications

Phentermine, topiramate, and combination therapy when a GLP-1 is not the first or only tool.

Overview

What other medications do you use?

Not every weight-management plan starts — or stays — on a GLP-1. Other medications can be appropriate when a stimulant, an anticonvulsant used for appetite, or a combination is the more honest tool.

These are prescribed and monitored here: phentermine, topiramate, and combination therapy when the exam supports them. They are not over-the-counter shortcuts.

Why patients choose it

Key benefits

  • Options when a GLP-1 is not indicated, not tolerated, or not the first step
  • Medical screening before any prescription
  • Follow-up that catches side effects, blood pressure, and stalled progress
  • Room to combine or switch rather than lock you to one drug class

Medications

Medications we discuss

  • Phentermine — a short-term appetite suppressant when cardiovascular and other screening allow it
  • Topiramate — used when appetite, binge pattern, or migraine history make it a reasonable adjunct
  • Combination therapy — pairing medications (including with a GLP-1 when appropriate) so each dose earns its place
Your visit

We review history, medications, and contraindications. If phentermine, topiramate, or a combination is the plan, we set monitoring and a stop rule — not an open-ended refill.

If a GLP-1 or dual agonist is the better next step, we say so. If none of these belong, we say that too.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about this treatment — your provider will cover anything specific to you at consultation.

When do you use phentermine or topiramate instead of a GLP-1?

When a GLP-1 is not indicated, not tolerated, not available, or not the first honest tool. Combination therapy is discussed when two mechanisms earn a place.

Is phentermine long-term?

It is typically short-term and screened for cardiovascular and other risks. We set a stop rule, not an open-ended refill.

Can these be combined with a GLP-1?

Sometimes. Combination therapy is a named plan with monitoring — not stacking leftovers.
